Well if you are like me then you love to make music, and like me you also wish you had more knobs and shit to turn when doing so. For a while now I have been thinking about spending some dough on one of those neat Mackie control surfaces, but I’m cheap. Also I have known for a while that you can use a joystick as a midi controller. I had considered using one of these USB joysticks as a controller or taking it apart and making it into a control surface, but usb is digital and that means more electronic hassle. Anyways So I have this Thrustmaster joystick from literally 15 years ago that uses the old fashioned game port.

The game port is far simpler to manipulate and mold into a control surface because all you need is very simple switches and pots. The schematics for connecting up the pots and switches can be found here http://this.is/tpg/products/unwinder/tech/wiring/ . and here even more indepth info on the ole port http://www.epanorama.net/documents/joystick/pc_joystick.html .Because my Thrustmaster only had 2 axis and 3 buttons I had to add 2 more potentiometers and another button to have the maximum . Its all really very simple and easy to build …and inexpensive as well. On the software side you’ll need Midiyoke found here http://www.midiox.com/index.htm or a similar driver in order to create a virtual midi port. You’ll also need a program like Vmidijoy http://www.sonicspot.com/vmidijoy/vmidijoy.html to program and route the functions. If you can find a PCI card with dual gameports you will have doubled your knob/slider/button capacity and you can control all kinds of shit in your favorite programs like Acid or FL or whatever. Anyway here goes some pics of this fucking thing I made ….i’ll prolly build another one next week with sliders when I get a card that supports 2 game ports. yeah it looks like ass but its proof of concept

here is the inside

the outside

and another one
