Hey hey hey,

It's P-Money! Just wanted to give a shout out to everyone. It was great to get to know you all a little bit last week. I have a feeling this could be the start of a fan-freakin?-tastic semester. Or, it could completely suck a$$. Time will tell.... smile.gif

As mentioned in class, I am NOT a morning person and was having a hard time getting my brain going on Thursday, but I?ll get used to this schedule soon and then we will really ROCK IT, I promise.

If you have anything to say, feel free to email (or text or Facebook message me) ANY time. I check my email approximately every 37 seconds, give or take about 37 hours. So, let me know what's up! Honestly, I always love hearing from people and promise to get back to you ASAP.

Word.

Before I go, a few things: I?m working on the group project assignments and will have yours by later this week, including group members and topic. On the day the assignments are handed out, I?ll give time to meet with your group members, get to know one another, and discuss preliminary ideas.

If you want to get an overview of what we'll be covering this week, the OFFICIAL reading is ATTACHED! It?s Chapter One of the Rogers ?Diffusion of Innovations? book (the NUMBER ONE diffusion book in the country, and NUMBER 4020 book overall) (seriously! Just looked up its Amazon.com ranking, and it?s 4020!). Please try to read it by Thursday, because we?ll be doing an exercise based on it in class.

Speaking of which, I set up a personal website with course information (coming soon) and some other stuff. Here it is:

http://academic.csuohio.edu/skalski_p/

Alright, gang, hope you had a nice weekend, and see you Tuesday (aka TOMORROW!).

Peace out,
--P$

yep, definitely a serial killer
BlackBox The Elijah
AND IT'S 420! P$ is the man...tell dat homie I said whats good.
BlackBox The Elijah
I went to that site, and that dude has lists of some pretty good favorite movies and games...
gisaster
Wow, what a dweeb.
PolyNapse
That's pathetic...
Why would you want to even try to be down with your students like that? Your students respect you more when you are professional about shit, and act like a PROFESSOR...not some fucking herb student..."hey guys that book is number 4020...herherher"...
You don't actually take this guy serious anymore do you? I think he fails at his job just based on that....

^ Don't agree at all... why do we have to be professional and act in perfect manner when we can be ourselves in a more relaxed environment?

If the dude can teach that's all that matters, not if he makes his students more comfortable and relaxed.

my opinion, but to all their own right?

Yeah..to all their own...but when I taught classes to undergrads during grad school I didn't try to be their friend. I earned their respect through passionately explaining the subject matter, and tried to maintain the teacher-student gap as much as possible, your the teacher..they're the students, at least that's the way I view it. But, look at me, i'm on this website engaging with people in a relaxed manner...I'm far from a tight ass...I just think that guy is an unprofessional herb...I agree totally that the most important thing is his ability to teach, but I also believe in professionalism...

Hello, everyone. There is a student in your class who requires a peer note taker. If you are interested and will be attending class regulary, take clear and legible notes, and agree to provide the notes to the student in a timely manner, please see me after class. For this service, you will receive $50 at the end of the semester.

Thank you,

^ got that today

Call me old school, but I don't feel the need to act the same at work as I do around my friends, or when I'm getting baked and writing, or any of the other shit I choose to do in my own time, most of the time around my friends I talk the way I would posting on this site using slang or w/e...when I'm teaching...nah, I take that shit more serious. But I feel like an ass for calling the guy a herb, I could see how people would like him, but then you'd probably hate me running your class....

Dont know ur age when grad student, but grad students aren't the same as profs. Profs already have respect, cuz (usually) ppl know they know their shit. They are students and you are teacher. But you are also a student.

Whatever ur comfortable with though, whatever gets students engaged.

Dude, the guy is a fucking dork. Don't take back what you said. You're dead right.

I had cool teachers, too. But, when it was time to actually teach, they didn't fuck around. I'd want this cunt sacked if he was teaching my sperm.

I was just recognizing the fact that some people may think a teacher like that is cool...but i didn't retract my statement that he is a herb, but who knows dude may actually know his shit and get the information across to the students...

@ C/S: I know what you're getting at..i wasn't referring to recitations or labs (also did that earlier), but my last year of my doctoral studies i gave lectures in my advisor's classes since he traveled frequently, lots of the students were 7 or 8 years younger than me..yeah, I was still a student, but when teaching you're not a student...you're the teacher...a lot of ppl are training to be a teacher or a professor usually when your teaching classes as a PhD student, and I don't think anyone earns much respect acting like that herb. From my experience it's not a popularity contest...it's more about how well you lecture, how responsive you are to questions, fairness, etc..and to be honest I think students learn more if they take you more seriously.
PolyNapse
By the way..I'm assuming that guy is a grad student or maybe a postdoc handling the class...if that guy is an actual faculty member i'd question the department...
David E
Actually the guy is new. Last semester is his first semester. He told us he has been playing video games since he was two and he tells us that if we want to challenge him in Guitar Hero he has it set up in the communication lab.

the class he teaches is called Communication technology and social change. The only thing that sux is that if your late one day on an assignment you lose 50%.

Yo everybody,

What’s up? I’ll tell you what’s up—the ceiling, the snow outside (more on that later), the price of 40 ouncers (sadly enough), and.. the EXAM ONE grades! They’re on Blackboard right now, so you can check them out anytime.

Here’s the KEY to what’s there. The first column, “Midterm,” has your results for the true false and multiple choice questions, out of 30. The second column, “Midterm Essay,” has your results for the essay question, out of 10. The scores were pretty solid overall, but because I’m a Professor of VIDEO GAMES (Dr. Mario?), I’m giving you ALL a special magic mushroom POWER UP! DoDo DODO DODODO! ONE bonus point! Oh yeah!!!

Here are some descriptive statistics to give you an idea of where you stand (including the bonus point):

Average Exam 1 TF/MC score: 22.8/30 (76%)

Average Exam 1 Essay score: 7.7/10 (77%)

Average score Overall: 30.5/40 (76%)

High score on Exam 1 TF/MC section: 29/30 (97%... holy crap!)

High score on Exam 1 Essay section: 10/10 (100%... holy SH*T!)

High score Overall: 38/40 (95%... niiiice!)

My high score on Ms. Pac Man: 108,669 (can you beat it?!?!)

As you can see, this test seems to have been somewhat challenging. If you didn’t do as well as you hoped, part of that could be attributed to not being familiar with my testing style. I’m sure you’ll all do better on the next test, since you now know what to expect.

And if you didn’t do well this time, don’t worry! Remember, this test is only a small part of your grade. A BIG part of your grade is participation, and almost all of you are ROCKING in that area so far! Those points should raise your overall score in the class considerably.

What else… the only other thing I have to say is… YOU ROCK! I’ve really enjoyed having you in class so far and hope the good times continue. Oooohhhhhh… we’re half way there… (Bon Jovi RULES). And actually, we’re MORE than half way there! YES!!!

Have an awesome break! It sure is off to a fantastic start…. :| Hope you all make it through THE STORM OF THE CENTURY unscathed. I have so far, but I’m snowed in! There’s a HUGE snow mound on the side of my house like the one Danny climbed down in “The Shining.” It’s un-FREAKIN’-believable. But I don’t mind… I picked up the complete second season of STEP BY STEP on DVD… talk about comedy! It doesn’t get much better, friends… along with my “Full House” and “ENSLAVED by the Bell” collections… we’re talking GREAT times! wink.gif

actually, i agree with both - like...
you wanna have a chillen professor because like said, its a more relaxed environment and you could work out shit with assignments, work, or papers

but also you want someone who is a professor professionally to make sure the students wouldn't slack off - to keep everyone straight and not just be a friend...

you need a mix..
