I plan on joining the Army or Coast Guard in a little over a year and always sat around wondering/wanting to learn and be fluent in 3 or 4 languages by the time im 40+ years old.. I figure since i'm not doing anything else, I mine as well start now

What would you guys recommend?? Language has always fascinated me, especially one "foreign" and respected.. Something like Spanish or French is too typecast and worn out due to the places i've lived, mostly spanish, but i'd consider french one day if its the route I take in the future

Anyway the point is, something not too easy and "popular", but something useful and wouldn't provide TOO MUCH challenge, given minimum +5 months learning at a moderate pace.. Im almost up for anything anyway..

Fluency means to speak, read, write as a native. VERY FEW ppl actually become fluent. Just fyi, not trying to be a prick just hate how ppl throw around the word fluency. Additionally if your brain hasn't been exposed to another language at a young age it is very difficult.

If it's not popular it's 8 out of 10 times not worth learning. The 2 out of 10 is ur a linguist, in the intelligence community, and/or moving there. U going to speak Swahili? To who? Something useful to one is pointless to another, smell me?

My advice, become disciplined, continually study, and find ppl in ur city that speak the language. Live it and sleep with it, literally the best way, haha. Look online there are always groups you can meet up with. If your goal is 3-4 know the language tree. And, you're not going to become fluent with moderate pace and haha 5 months to become fluent? Unless ur a ployglot, u gotta be serious about it

Indeed. BUT, not fluent at 5 months, no.. just having a little bit down.. As in starting to speak it somewhat, way pass the flashcard one words and onto some sentences here and there......... and YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAA its gonna be moderate, ill definitely BE whatever language I AM, but there are other things I HAVE TO DO man.. Im serious enough but got nothing to prove on here, just have faith my CaseStudy buddy

I like this thread. I share the same goal with you, I've known people who can speak up to 10 languages and I find it fascinating. I want to learn Spanish and Arabic for sure, past that I would like to explore the world to decide what other languages and cultures I truly would like to connect with. This would be obviously in an ideal world, I can only pray I am given the time to achieve this. All I have to do now is find the time to learn them, I've downloaded a training program for over 20 languages, that was 6 months ago and nothing has been achieve thus far. Pitiful. Ha. Ha.

Consider French and Spanish as well. Also, if you're interested, look into Filipino (perhaps Tagalog dialect)- you'll notice some similarities with the Spanish language.

When I learn a new word in for example English, I tend to look up the etymology of the word. I got a Latin dictionary, it's cool.

Wow you echo my say the exact same lingustic dreams i have. I took four semesters of Spanish at a community college and i will try to brush up on it some more so that way when i take an intership for Mexico or Belize i will be able to handle myself in that environment. I just go done registering for an intensive 8 weeks summer course in Arabic. Its monday through thursday 10-2.

id have to look up what a etymology is before i can think of looking up the etymology of other words.

I recommend French or Spanish really. It shouldn't matter how 'exotic' it is. Though if that's an issue you can always take something like Japanese or Mandarin. Be warned though its an almost entirely different way of thinking.

I'd love to speak more languages too, hopedully i can move to france for a year to study.
