is anyone here in the the Air force or have been in the Air force
I'm thinking about joining to futher my education and develope a career
if you have any information or advice to give that would be great
I talked to a recruiter but I rather talk to a person who's not in that manipulative persuasive mindset
that just want to recruite but not give hard core factual information on advantages and the disadvantages

thanks

Don't join any Military Branch. I'm only going to warn you once.
VirtualMan
explain to me?

Most people I've talked to said that's the BEST branch to serve in
I would like to know what lay behind your thoughts on not joining the Air Force

Good luck

My sister was in the Coast Guard, I heard that's the best branch to join honestly. But all the branches promise things they don't fulfill. If you are fooled by the government enough to join, then at least make sure you get all their promises IN WRITING, because they will fuck you over with signing bonuses.

My brother plans on joining the Air Force too, I'd look into it Intensely, talk to some people whove already served, make sure it's something you absolutely, positively want to do, 'cause once you sell your soul to the government you ain't gettin' that shit back NAH MEAN

I you're going to join a military branch, the Air Force would be the best to do. You can learn trades rather than being Cannon Fodder

I have a good idea: talk to someone IN PERSON who is actually in the military, NOT people who are engulfed by ridiculous fallacies about it and aren't/haven't even been in it themselves. That way, if someone who is actually in the military speaks to you negatively about it, you can reach legitimate conclusions based on their experience. Don't take advice from someone who is inexperienced/has no experience at something; they ultimately don't know shit.

pros
free housing, free medical, free dental, free electricity, really good loans and there are a plethora of none combat positions. you can bank money if you know what your doing.

Cons
there is a war going on, and I have heard from many air force guys that the air force is doing the armys job, so there actually having guys on the front lines and in more combat scenarios due to lack of enlisted ground troops in the army and marines.
You could sign up for a non combat position and end up in a combat position due to lack of available positions.
You could die.
the coast guard is the best branch then the air force then navy. I have a brother in the army, he has done 2 15 month tours in 3 years. i have another brother who was in the air force, didn't do any tours but could not advance so he went to the navy officer training and became an officer. he will not see any combat and he gets paid a lot for being an officer.

your best bet, is to pursue a education and get your ba, then join the air force navy or coast guard as an officer, when you finish if you go career you will be pulling in almost double of a regular enlisted and you will avoid almost all combat scenarios. Plus if your a gov employee and you pay your minimum on your school loans for 10 years they will pay the rest of your loans off.

Unfortunately that is true. For example, The Marine Corps generally spearheads an assault/does the initial parts of an invasion, etc., and the Army is supposed to fill in and take control of the territory the Marines took. In Iraq, the Marines have been having to spearhead assaults AND hold whatever they take because the Army hasn't been able to do that, which has been further stretching/stressing the Marines and leading to servicemen from the Air Force/Navy filling in Army-type rolls.

However, I have 2 friends who just got back from Iraq, both Marines, and neither of them ever saw anything close to combat. I have several friends in the Air Force and all of them love it, they say it's easy money and not too difficult to do, one of them is doing it up in Japan right now.

Going for commissioning as an officer is probably always the best way to go, if you put yourself in the position to do it as far as education goes, since you need a Bachelor's to do it. You can get scholarships that pay for all your education and give you monthly stipends/book money too from the military. That's what I'm doing, I'm going for a commissioning in the Marine Corps through ROTC.

thanks for the feed back
so going in as an officer would be the best way to go
this is my last year in high school
I got all my credits
I'm just waiting for graduation day
I got accepted to UNC and FSU on a full scholarship
in human studies in psychology
but the only thing that scares me about joining the air force
is being branched off to doing another service in the military that is lacking service men
but would that be in a contract you have to sign when joining
Omen could you ask your brother for me and see if that's in the contract

I'm thinking about doing that if my career doesn't jumpstart the way I intend it to when I graduate college in 2010

Dude go to college first, you never know what'll be tossed your way with an education like that, and if worse comes to worse join the Air Force or Coast Guard as a last resort-type deal

but hey, it's your life, you don't want to be staring down a gun barrel wishing you were at school

Not everyone who joins the military is slung into combat/combat roles. Take a look at the percentage of servicemen who actually see combat, it is OVERWHELMINGLY tiny compared to the total number in the military, it's like comparing the diameter of the Earth to the diameter of the solar system.

And Virtual, thats fuckin awesome, full rides to FSU and UNC. By all means go for it. Start your education, you have plenty of time that way to decide what you really want to do and it's not like you're going to be wasting your time waiting, and with the education if you still decide to do Air Force, you can go the officer's route and make much better money/get lots of leadership experience.

Im currently in the Air Force in tech scool in fire protection. To piggyback Raider, I would go to college first. There is no rush, trust me. Besides it can only help you if you want to go career.

For the combat aspect... Now we are at war. Plain and simple. I have a guy in tech school naw who's getting cold feet because he just found out that firefighters can go to Iraq too. Now I won't lie. I don't wanna go, but that what you ask for if you sign up. It's the military. Now there are jobs that don't have a HIGH chance of being shipped to the sandbox, but that doesn't mean you wont be deployed. The Air Force is now switching to a joint task force style of deployment, where all branches are being merged. Actually the Air Force, just bumped up their basic training to 8 weeks instead of 6.5 weeks, to teach more combat related material.

However, I would think about your carrer choices for the military. If you have a degree- you're practically a shoe-in. Pick something you can bring back to the civillian world, if you decide its not for you. And go officer. And get anything they offer you in writing.
