What's this class about?

Srry for responding so late. I am planing on studying abroad in the summer to Kerela, India for Sociology. So the professor wants everyone who is going to India to take this class before we leave in the Summer. So we basically learn everything about India, food, culture etc. We are going to be learning the Malyaalam language which is spoken in Southern India. We will be visiting a Hindu temple and an Indian family and we have to write a paper on what Americans perceptions of India is. We also have to submit a proposal of some topic we would like to explore further: Religion, politics Micro-finance etc.

Here is a how the course is described in my syllabus.

QUOTE
"This course examines the rational for participating in the India Experience Program. Discuss the pre departure perception about India--Personal, Relatives, friends and media views. THe course offers a brief overview of geography, history, social, cultural, religious and linguistic aspects of india with particular reference to Kerela--the Southwestern part of India. There is a correspondence through email with Indian college students as pen pals. The course will focus on travel, health related issues, culture shock, role expecations of a study abroad student, interactive session with former participants, observational visit to the Cleveland Hindu temple, learn about different traditions, including a visit to a local Indian Family, tast Indian food etc. Students will have the oppurtunity to learn Malyaalam Language expressions.

What is your major? Have you done any undergraduate research yet?
Poetic
^I'm majoring in medicine- working on my M.D. I did a few research papers in undergrad, but will get into doing field-related research later in my schooling/training. I'd really like to do some work on diabetes and islet-cell transplantation.

Is anyone here a transfer student? I am currently getting increasingly frustrated at the seemingly arbitrary rules being applied to me as a transfer studuent. I thought that if i went to a local communitty college that the classes that were suppose to transfer would transfer. Evidently that is not the case. Academic Buracracy is a bitch check out my status;

So my first major is Communication. In order to get the degree all com majors have to take com 101. Well i talked to another student who graduated with a com degree and he told me they told him he didnt need it. I come to find out i qualify as well because i took the same com classes at the same college. So in 2006 i go into the com department and had them look at my transfer credits. They agreed and granted me permission to take the next level com for which com 101 is a prerequist. Well, fastforward and now im being told those classes from my school dont count anymore. I dont mind taking the class it would be an easy GDP booster but that does not excuse the confusion. Wouldn't it make sense that the communication department should be the most effective in terms of communicating what its policy is.

My second complaint is that my institution seems to be hesitant on honoring my request for three majors. You see when i first started offf i originally only was going to double major in communication and socioology until i had decided that i wanted to study diplomacy at the masters level. Well i figured an undergraduate degree in international relations would be a good start. So rather than change majors immediately i decided to wait because one of the requirments is that you have to have competency in the language of your area of studies. So i didnt want to take Arabic and get frustrated because i didnt think i could learn it. so i took two classes and got A's in both of those classes, so when i finally decided to add International Relations to my resume of majors my university dropped my com degree The only problem is that i took enough classes to qualify for a major in both Sociology and communication and i have repeatedly been told that i could triple major even though they discouraged it because it would take longer.

My last complaint is with the socoiology department . The advisor told me that he would allow my social work class i took for my trip to india to count as a sociology credit yet it has not shown up on my degree audit. He also told me that he would allow me to use one of my sociology classes at the junior college to count for an elective because i would need only one more credit and it would be silly for me to take another class for just that one credit. For whatevever reason the electronic degree audit is not reconizeing these classeses.

If anything could be learn from my experience as a tranfer student it is this; make sure you have everything documented for future refrence. I used what is callled a "transfer model" so that there would be no ambiguity concerning the classes i took for general eduacation requirments but when it came to my major requirements that is a whole nother issue.

I feel you man. I definitely understand your frustration- I was in a similar situation with transferring credits. It was a mess.
What I don't get, is why in the world would they try to dissuade you from doing a triple major? That's nonsense. If anything it should be encouraged and they should help you with scheduling and what not.
Just bear with it now, and keep your eye on the goal.
David E
Thanks for the support. I just get mad when i send emails out or call and nobody returns my calls or emails. it frustrates me cuz i feel like im wasting time that could be spent doing something else. I mean i sent the college three emails explaining my situation and i didnt hear anything back. Similarly, I also sent several emails and phonecalls to the ACLU in regards to volunteering with them or doing an internship. Yet they still have not sent me anything. I just want them to tell me that they dont have any positions open or i do not meet their requirments so atleast I know that they acknowleged my email.
