Who listens to music when they study?
My "homework blend" playlist is mostly classical and instrumentals- nothing really upbeat or lyrical or I'd get distracted.
What about you?

I agree, lyrical gets you thinking too much about the music and not enough about the work. Every tried thrash metal? The tempo and energy gets you reading and studying faster and more hyped, I think its pretty good, but, depends if you like that kinda thing, not really a big fan, but can help in this kinda situation.

I'm assuming you don't care about the quality of your homework if you'll purposely introduce an foreign element which will disrupt your mind and reduce your ability to concentrate on the task at hand.

The correct answer is that you shouldn't be listening to any music while performing any task which requires concentration, regardless of whether or not you feel it aids you.
Poetic
That's quite the assumption, isn't it?

that might be true for you, however, not everybody is the same.

personally i love listening to music while studying but as others have said music that includes a lot of lyrics (rap...) can be quite distracting.

usually i just bump an instrumental album/compilation/a bunch of freebeats i found on the web etc. i actually find a lot of the beats i then use for my PLOO mixes during this process lol.

Your anecdotes don't concern me. Fact is, that empirical evidence has proved that external stimuli such as music reduces your ability to concentrate, therefore lowering the quality of whatever you are doing.

Therefore, the correct answer is no music at all. Absolute silence would be your best bet.

This thread isn't about methods to enhance concentration while studying, it's about what music you like to listen to when you are studying.

Thanks for the empirical evidence though.

What's the point of studying if you aren't maximizing your ability to concentrate and therefore retain information? Guess what, listening to anything reduces your ability to do either.

Any smart person would state that they don't listen to music when they study.

Look Nomad, I realize what you're saying and I agree that it takes away from your concentration, but you're just waltzing in here telling people they're basically stupid for even discussing this. There is no correct answer in this discussion, what you gave is nothing more than poorly presented, but good advice. So thanks.

what xprenn said basically...

ok, studies have shown this is the case. thank you for the information. i personally couldn't care less what some study is telling me though. i like to listen to music when i study. ok, my concentration is lower because of music. too bad, i'll have to study a bit longer. at least it's not so boring though cause i'm listening to music while i study wink.gif

Of course there's no correct answer. Just because the question is subjective, doesn't mean it isn't stupid.

There is no such thing as music to study by. By virtue of being external stimuli it cannot do anything other than negatively affect your ability to study.

That's like asking what the best body cast is for gymnastics. It makes absolutely no sense.

Your boredom is only alleviated by you concentrating on the music which in turn invalidates your studying. Lack of concentration greatly affects your retention rates. If the short lived thrill of listening to music is worth you forgetting everything you studied, then you do yourself and the entire concept of education a disservice.

OK, we're clearly not on the same page here. Let's just agree to disagree and not turn this in some silly back-and-forth thing. I understand how you see it and I think you understand my view as well, so let's just keep the topic going, so we don't end up wasting time on this.

So to get back on-topic:
If I listen to music while studying - this would be studying something I'm not particularly interested in, like a compulsory school thing for example - I mainly listen to instrumentals and ambient stuff without singing.

I don't, actually.
Poetic
I'd be interested in reading this study.
At any rate, you have to find out what works best for you. I'm not sure studying in silence would be very beneficial to someone who is an auditory learner, for example. What about during lectures? I retain a lot of information by listening to my professor.

"Auditory learning is a learning style in which a person learns most effectively by listening to information delivered orally, in lectures, speeches, and oral sessions. Auditory learners make up about 20% of the population"

I'm sure listening to music would render them incapable of hearing the information. The application of the mind during study works best in absolute silence. If the information is delivered orally, than you'd have to block out external stimuli other than what you're listening to, in other words, music would still be a negative influence.

The original topic wasn't to ask about what makes sense TO YOU while studying. It was just about what music do you listen to IF you decide to listen to music WHILE you were studying. Jeez, get off the high horse and answer the question, or don't at all.

I actually like instrumentals while studying, like the piano classics from Final Fantasy VII. However I do love rap music, so I'll listen to Bone Thugs, Jedi Mind Tricks, or Nas with my headphones on but the volume turned down low, so I can catch more melody/beat than actual lyrics.

But since empirical evidence has shown that I'm a total genius, I can listen to lyrical music and not have my studying be affected. I felt like sharing this topic crushing FACT with you all banana.gif

What empirical evidence are you referring to? I got to hear this. Talk about a high horse.

It doesn't make sense to anybody with a functioning mind. If you do decide to listen to music while studying, you obviously aren't aiming to study to the best of your ability.

The question is "Music to study by?", the answer is none.

Nothing wrong with that. Simply means that you aren't studying to the best of your ability.
