Full Version: A question about sleep.

Do you know when you have slept less than you would normally, and you feel like crap in the morning, but during the day you are more active than usual?

I know many people who experience this. Focus seems to be heightened and you generally feel more energetic. I'm experiencing this right now actually lol.gif

Now I was wondering if there was any 'scientific' basis for this. A neurological effect? I'd really like to know the cause of this, any information would be helpful!

i dna if it happens to everyone for the same reasons or i dont really kno anything factual about it.... but mayb it has to do with the energy just of the day and your abilitie to make use of it with your body even with lack of sleep......mayb the body uses energy more effecently with less sleep.......or it could be u ate the right thing on the right day at the right time to give you energy burst......or if u a habitual smoker this will happen to you wen u smoke.....a couple hours after you start feelin tired then u smoke again and are right back to being str8....

my guess is its some sort of system within the brain thats connect with all the stuff i said..... and more stuff that i didnt think of

Hmm, nice thought about the body being more efficient with less sleep. I was thinking perhaps a lack of sleep affects your brainwave patterns or something, causing you to feel different.
Perhaps you are actually more unstable, causing your overall feel at that moment to easily overpower your state of being. This would explain how you can also become very tired all of a sudden when you've had little sleep.

Oh, and I don't smoke.

This is a great question- it really got me thinking. Here's what I came up with:
During sleep, certain neurotransmitter levels are either increased or decreased. Acetylcholine, for example, increases during sleep: this effects muscle activity and excitability. If you are deprived of sleep, it could be that there would be a "temporary abundance" of it, as it would not have had the proper time to be broken down or reuptaken. This could be one source of the extra energy.
Another neurotransmitter that is decreased during sleep is norepinephrine, which effects alertness and aids in "fight or flight". If you haven't had enough sleep, it could be that the levels have not decreased enough and, again, there is an abundance of it, making you more alert.
I have no idea if this is the case- just my hypothesis.

^that is very interesting. What do you study? How do you know these things?

I'm studying medicine, and I took neuroscience 2 semesters ago- that's where I learned about the neurotransmitter levels in sleep.
